Tian Chua: 'Climate change, social protection, jobs, good governance part of my manifesto'

SHAH ALAM - Independent Batu candidate Tian Chua has revealed three key aspects of his upcoming manifesto, which will be released early next week.

He said the nation is confronted with multiple crises and the issue extends beyond gaining enough seats to form a government.

One of the aspects mentioned by Tian Chua is the impending climate disaster in Malaysia.

“Now we see everywhere there are red alerts and we’re having elections in a situation of floods and raining season,” he said during Sinar Daily's Fireside Chat programme.

“We should take this as a reminder that the planet is facing a major cosmic disaster.

Tian Chua stated that technology and digitisation could aid in resolving climate-related issues such as carbon emission reduction.

He stated that the second aspect of his manifesto is post-Covid social protection.

According to Tian Chua, the nation must also consider social protection for its citizens.

“Malaysia is also entering another crisis, (which is an) ageing society.

“We really have to start thinking about social insurance for the private sectors," he said.

He added that we could provide support by facilitating old-age pensions, unemployment, and micro, small, and medium-sized businesses.

Tian Chua added that the third aspect focuses on good governance and corruption issues.

“These are the issues that I've been bringing up now and people associating it with me.

The former PKR vice president said that the pursuit of good governance should always be a priority.

He further spoke on Batu's future development.

“We have to look forward to how we can transform Batu into a vibrant economic centre and also at the same time a peaceful homeland, home ground communities for everybody.

On Nov 5, it was announced that ten candidates would contest for seats in the Batu parliament.

In 2018, the Election Commission (EC) denied Tian Chua's application to run in Batu because the two-term incumbent was fined RM2,000 for insulting the modesty of a police officer.

This year, Tian Chua returned to Batu to defend his seat as an independent candidate.
