SHAH ALAM - The function and role of the cabinet need a clear direction, especially in terms of resolving the economic crisis, political stability and putting the country on the right track.

State Islamic Religious Affairs, Consumer Affairs and Halal Industry Committee chairman Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said these aspects were seen as a great challenge to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the cabinet line-up of the unity government which will be formed.

“This has to do with the national governance system. In Parliament, be it the government or the opposition, their role and function are as policy-makers.

“For the government to implement anything whether it is big or small, it will eventually be guided by the decisions made in Parliament.

“That’s why to me, it is not about the size of the cabinet, but the cabinet needs a clear direction,” he said.

He said this during a Sinar Live programme entitled “Cabaran Kabinet Kecil Anwar” (Anwar’s small cabinet challenge) which was broadcasted on all Sinar Harian digital platforms on Sunday.

Besides Mohd Zawawi, Sekijang MP Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Darul Ehsan Institute executive director Datuk Ismail Yusop also appeared as panellists while Fahiz Ariff was the moderator.

Meanwhile, Ismail said Anwar was seen as a leader who has his own vision.

He said he believed that the approach used by Anwar in resolving certain problems were by utilising all available resources.

“I am confident that Anwar will give the role to each MPs as this is a unity government that combines all the political parties’ strengths in the country.

“So, I see that there will be more select committee in Parliament and they will conduct the check and balance process and directly involved in the administration of each existing minitries,” he said.
