SHAH ALAM - Citizenship issues of children born overseas to Malaysian mothers were among top focus of Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said he was briefed by Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz on the matter.

"I was informed on the matter and it required certain decisions to be made.We will focus on the constitution aspect, the law aspect and the humanity aspect.

"This will be my in top priorities as the minister," he told reporters today.

It was reported previously that the Court of Appeal (COA) has allowed the government's bid to overturn a landmark ruling which said that children born overseas to Malaysian mothers with foreign spouses were entitled to Malaysian citizenship.

Earlier, Saifuddin clocked in for official duties at the ministry at 9.28am here today.

Equipped with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's advice, Saiffuddin is confident that he will manuever the ministry in the right direction.

"We’ll continue to observe and make sure policies to be perfectly executed.

“If the previous policies need improvements, then there is no need to postpone them. We will go ahead with it as long as the minister and the ministry team must have a comprehensive consultation,” he said.

Saifuddin was welcomed by ministry's secretary-general Datuk Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz and the Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.
