PUTRAJAYA - Police are given the freedom to open an investigation paper against Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over the latter’s statement claiming that voters in Padang Serai, Kedah have asked for payment to return and vote.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said he trusted Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani to investigate if the allegations in the statement were substantiated.

"If there is a basis for police to carry out investigations into the statement issued by Sanusi, they will do so.

"I trust the police force’s professionalism and will give space for Acryl Sani and his team.

"I give the complete freedom based on the merits of the report or the content of the complaint," he said in a press conference at the Home Ministry on Tuesday.

It was reported that Digital Communications Minister Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil urged authorities to conduct an investigation into statements made by Sanusi in a campaign video on TikTok.

The Kedah PN chairman was reported to have made the statement during a campaign to support the Padang Serai PN candidate Azman Nasruddin.
