Shafiq had been involved in a controversy when he was accused of uttering abusive words towards a Malaysian Immigration Department (Immigration) officer who was on duty at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

PSD however denied the accusation and explained that Shafiq only reprimanded the Immigration officer, particularly Chief Assistant Superintendent James Lee regarding non-compliance with practices and procedures.
