GEORGE TOWN - Penang is introducing yet another free cross-channel bus service, the Cat Bridge linking Bukit Mertajam on the mainland with Komtar here beginning Jan 1.

State Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this was part of efforts to optimise the public transport network in Penang, especially in integrating services between the mainland and island.

"The Cat Bridge Bukit Mertajam (CT14) covers 26 kilometres, beginning at Summit Bukit Mertajam and going through Bandar Perda and Penang to head to the Komtar Bus Terminal.

"This will be the trial route beginning Jan 1 for six months and five buses will be used for the new line,” he said in a statement today.

He said an average journey from end to end is expected to take between 60 and 85 minutes and passengers can identify the route for the red buses with the wrapping Bukit Mertajam Bas Merah (BM) Ke Komtar.
