Landslide: One-way road is ready, will open soon

SHAH ALAM - The Selangor government has completed the one-way road on Jalan Batang Kali-Genting Highlands, which was closed following the landslide at the Fathers' Organic Farm camp, Gohtong Jaya, which killed 31 victims on Dec 16.

Selangor Infrastructure, Public Facilities, Modernization of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry executive council, Ir Izham Hashim said the one-way road was completed as a temporary measure for the convenience for some 4,000 to 5,000 Selangor residents who commute daily to Genting Highlands, Pahang for work.

He said the road which is managed by the Malaysia Public Works Department (JKR), can be used soon as temporary alternative.

"We have prepared a temporary one-way road, and it will be opened soon," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian about workers' complaints on their difficulties commuting to work as the Batang Kali-Genting Highlands road was halted due to the tragedy.

However, Izham said, the state government still taking into consideration on the safety aspect of using the road.

"Security issues are our main agenda to ensure that those who use the route are safe," he said

On Dec 20, Sinar Harian reported that the Batang Kali-Genting Highlands road was closed due to repair work after the landslide incident.

The repair which was expected to be completed in a year, had garnered mixed responses from road users on social media.

One such user, Hasif Fakhrullah, lamented that the slope and road repair work in the area of the landslide incident which had caused him to take the long and congested route from Gombak.

Previously, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari had announced that the Batang Kali-Genting Highlands road which is currently closed, will be widened and will reopened early or mid-January.

He said that the matter has been decided during his discussion with Selangor JKR.
