SHAH ALAM - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim must give maximum freedom to the justice system and the courts without any compromise to ensure the process to restore their integrity goes smoothly.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu's policy studies programme lecturer, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Yusri Ibrahim said the move is very important to show that the government is really serious and honest about fighting corruption and forming good governance..

"A comprehensive integrity agenda starts from the highest levels of leadership to the bottom, and its implementation must be the same for everyone across the board regardless of who they are," he said.

Mohd Yusri said this during the 'Kompas Rasuah Busters' programme titled "Cabaran Anwar Pulihkan Integriti" (Anwar's Challenge to Restore Integrity) at Karangkraf Complex here on Wednesday.

Lawyer Abi Mursyidin Awal was also in attendance.

Moving forward, Anwar as well as other leaders in the government need to have a practical and effective action plan to deal with issues related to corruption in the country, Mohd Yusri said.

He added that the government must pay attention to the transparency of funding involving political parties in the country, which could be a challenge.

"For example, it is common knowledge that funds for development projects received by contractors, must be given to political parties or people involved in the party.

"So this is one of the matters that needs attention, and immediate measures must be in place to eradicate this kind of deeply rooted culture.

"As we know, this culture has been ignored for a long time, and it is difficult to eliminate it in a short period of time," he added.

The government must now lead by example by implementing an action plan to address all these issues, which have been ingrained in our culture.
