Broiler chicken production costs RM6.53 per kg, RM0.48 for eggs - DOSM

SHAH ALAM - According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the average cost of producing broiler chicken in Malaysia in September was RM6.53 per kilogramme (kg), while the average cost of producing eggs was RM0.48.

Malaysian Statistician Chief Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said a kilogramme of chicken on the farm would cost between RM6.86 and RM7.84 if five, ten, or twenty percent of the profit rate is calculated.

He added profit margin of chicken per kg at the wholesale level was recorded at RM1.30, while the profit margin of chicken per kg at the retail level was at RM1.25.

"The production cost of a broiler chicken includes 98.6 per cent of direct costs and 1.4 per cent of indirect costs. Among the biggest components were the feed (65.1 per cent) and the cost of purchasing day-old chicks (16 per cent).

"The production costs for eggs consisted of 96.9 per cent of direct costs and 3.1 per cent of indirect costs, where 76.2 per involved the cost of feed and 15.8 per cent were the cost of utilities, salaries, and wages."

"The cost of purchasing a day-old chick is 2.2 percent of the total costs of egg production," he said today in a media statement on the Report of Special Study on Chicken and Egg Production Cost 2022.

Uzir said the average cost of producing an egg stands at RM0.48, assuming a five per cent, 10 per cent and 20 per cent profit from the production cost of eggs

"The profit margin per egg at the wholesale and retail levels was recorded at RM0.04 and RM0.02, respectively," he said.
