SHAH ALAM - The Local Government Development Ministry has allocated RM100 million for 260 urban beautification and greening projects by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to make Kuala Lumpur an international metropolis.

Its minister, Nga Kor Ming said the initiative was taken to support the order by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"Since the prime minister ordered DBKL to beautify the nation's capital city last month, DBKL has immediately identified 260 development projects.

"To foster a sustainable lifestyle, the government encourages more people to use public transport, which is not only an environmentally friendly practise but can also reduce carbon emissions," he said.

The government had planned many works for the betterment of the city, which include upgrading and improving the cleanliness of public toilets in Kuala Lumpur, upgrading 20 business districts around the capital, upgrading seven hawker centers, and upgrading back alleys.

Moreover, repainting DBKL apartments, installing LED and solar street lights, upgrading and beautifying major tourist attractions, creating more footpaths, improving existing public transport, and more were also considered in the projects.

"The government has given the greenlight to DBKL's request for more electrically free buses (Go KL Ride) in order to improve the public facilities.

"Also, the trees and decorative plants that were destroyed near Dataran Merdeka during Independence Day have also been replanted," he said.

Nga further called for the residents to appreciate the work of authorities in taking care of the city’s environment.

Moreover, he is said to be conducting spot checks to ensure all the local governments throughout the whole country managed to do the improvement work conducively.
