GEORGETOWN - Muslim couples that want to elope overseas are advised to inform their intentions to their parents or next of kin.

Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor said those who have done so without permission from their families must apologise for their inconsiderate actions.

“They should inform their parents or next of kin regarding the marriage. The couple who wants to marry overseas must inform their family of their intentions.

“If it has happened, as children, they must apologise to their parents or next of kin based on what they have done," he said when contacted on Sunday.

He said as children, the couple who wants get married should respect their parents and inform them.

“Marriage is not a laughing matter, parents need to be informed of the union.

“If it has happened (marriage overseas) be smart and try to get on their good side such as giving them gifts or celebrating them in certain ceremonies such as birthdays or mother’s day.

“Through such methods, the hearts of parents, next of kin, siblings and in-laws who were hurt would be remedied. What’s broken can be fixed again,” he said.
