MELAKA - The 2022 Umno general assembly must become the platform to field views and recommendations towards rebuilding the strength of the party following the unexpectedly heavy defeat in the 15th General Election (GE15) on Nov 19 last year.

Melaka Umno deputy chief Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad said it was now more important for the general assembly to act as the medium to unite all in strengthening the president's institution in order for any mandate given by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to be accepted by all members.

"In any organisation if the chief's words were not accepted by any segment of the party members, the party can't operate smoothly. That is why the president's institution must be reinforced and respected," he said when contacted by Sinar on Tuesday.

Melaka Umno chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh hoped for all members to move forward with the unity government as urged by the president.

The media previously reported the Umno general assembly would take place on Wednesday until Saturday involving Umno members and Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties as well as six friends of BN to focus on the party’s internal issues.
