KUALA LUMPUR : Umno chose to prioritise Malaysia in its decision to join hands with Pakatan Harapan to form the Unity government.
In his opening speech for the party’s wings tonight, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan said due to the political instability at the time, the party decided to work together with PH, GRS and GPS to form the government for the nation.
“ The party leadership at the time was of the opinion that Umno’s participation in the unity government was the best way as it gave the party a unique and strategic position.” he elaborated.
Mohamad Hassan said Umno had to ensure that the government could be formed eventhough it suffered great losses in the 15th general election.
Mohamed Hassan was elaborating on the reasons behind the party's decision to work together with parties that have been seen as its nemesis for so long.
" I understand that many have questioned our decision why we chose to work with PH, the simple answer is we chose what was best for the nation.
" We only became a part of a unity government that was proposed by the Yang- Dipertuan Agong nothing less and nothing more," he said.
Mohamed Hassan said as Perikatan Nasional had refused to collaborate with PH to form the unity government in any way, Umno had to step up to solve the problem.
" We could let the future of Malaysia become secondary to the political turmoil at the time, we choose to put the people first and our differences aside.
" This is a strategic move for the party to ensure that Umno has a voice in the new government, " he stressed.
