KUALA LUMPUR - Contrary to prevailing sentiment, two Umno leaders were of the opinion that the president and deputy president posts should be opened for contest in the coming party poll.

In expressing his view Umno youth deputy chief Shahril Hamdan cited that the conduct of the party election should adhere to its usual polling convention.

“Based on that (assembly order), party poll usually happens, and I agree that there needs to be a contest,” he told reporters when met at the 2022 Umno General Assembly here today.

A similar view was also echoed by by Wangsa Maju division chief, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Abdullah.

"I think the party president [Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi] should consider the matter as it can strengthen Umno to face the coming state elections," he reasoned.

As it is Zahid seemed poise to retain his presidential post after a total 140 Umno division chiefs agreed that the top two posts should not be opened for contest.

Earlier today, in his policy speech, Zahid said that he will leave it to the delegates at the General Assembly to determine whether the top two posts should be opened for contest.
