PONTIAN - Umno denies the existence of ghost voters brought into the Merdeka Hall to approve the motion for the party’s top positions not to be contested.

Umno Secretary-General Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the claims were described as evil and slanderous accusations to the party.

He said Umno permanent chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruddin was asked to order all non-representative members in the hall to leave.

“The wild accusation is 100 per cent untrue. Cards with representatives’ picture are used throughout the entirety of the conference and those sitting on the representative seats know each other and it was also announced that the seats were set,” he said.

He said this during the press conference after the Pontian District Village Chiefs swearing-in ceremony at the district office, here, on Sunday.

On a video circulated about the ghost voters, Umno Youth Chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed those were Sabil Squad officers among the Youth Chief entrusted to manage and maintain the harmony inside and outside of the Merdeka Hall.

“The location of the video was in the Terengganu Room which was the room specifically for the Sabil Squad Secretary,” he said.

When asked whether Umno would make a police report regarding the accusations, the Pontian MP explained it was unnecessary.

“There’s no need to make a police report because the issue was cleared up,” he said.

On Saturday former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin claimed there was a ‘Merdeka Hall Move’ conspiracy to pass an additional motion for the two top Umno positions not to be contested in the next election.

Khairy claimed the tags on the seats in the Merdeka Hall that were specifically for Umno representatives were taken off as an effort to bring ‘imported representatives’ to approve the additional motion.
