PUTRAJAYA - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the asset declarations done by political leaders previously are just gimmicks.

He said the declaration did not reflect the true success of politicians including those in the cabinet now.

"They can have hundreds of millions but declare RM10 or RM11 million," he said at the 2023 Budget Dialogue Council themed "Membangun Malaysia Madani" at the Finance Ministry, here, today.

He said a clear parameter needed to be developed regarding the matter and a discussion with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was currently being held to ensure that the declaration of assets was transparent.

"When I looked at the figures in the file, I was surprised.

"Most people don't tell the truth. It becomes a laughingstock," he said.

Last week, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said there were no instructions from Anwar to cabinet ministers regarding the matter.

In the 15th General Election (GE15), majority of the 72 Party Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidates declared their assets following the party's requirement for all its candidates to do so.
