PUTRAJAYA - Four functions of the Children's Commission have been outlined, which include to promote awareness and to educate the masses and the government on children's rights.

Law Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the role of the commission will be to advice and aid the government in formulating laws, good governance and actions that needs to be taken in terms of protecting the rights of children

"The commission could advice the government regarding the obligations stipulated under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other related international agreements regarding children's issues and rights," she elaborated.

She said that the commission could also conduct enquiries and investigations into cases of abuse and if there were any complaints in terms of a breach in children's rights.

"The commissioner will lead the process of establishing the Children's Commission through the drafting of a specific act during their appointment," she said in a statement on Thursday.

She said the announcement of the Children's Commission will be done after gaining approval from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in line with Section 5 (2) of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission Act 1999.

"I would like to give my thanks to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Cabinet Ministers who agreed to establish this commission to protect the children," she said.
