KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 1,445 road crashes were recorded across the country on the fifth day of ‘Op Selamat 19’ yesterday.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim said it involved 1,724 vehicles, with cars recording the highest number of cases at 1,310.

This was followed by four-wheel drives with 230 cases, motorbikes (144), lorries (17), buses (11), vans (nine), taxis (two) and ambulances (one).

Meanwhile, he said the police were stepping up efforts to minimise the accident rate and increase the prevention of burglaries throughout the festive season.

"The initiatives implemented are crash prevention measures, emphasising on road safety, as well as educating users to practice safe driving and to comply with traffic laws," he said in a statement tonight.
