SHAH ALAM - Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin was today elected into FIFA Council for the 2023-2027 term at the 33rd Asian Football Confederation (AFC) congress in Manama, Bahrain.

Hamidin will be among five male representatives from AFC in the FIFA council after winning the second highest number of votes out of seven candidates.

He will be joined by Japan's Kohzo Tashima, Mariano Araneta Jr of the Philippines, Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar and Yasser H. Almisehal of Saudi Arabia, while Kanya Keomany of Laos will be the AFC's female representative on the FIFA Council.

Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah was the first Malaysian to serve in the FIFA Council following His Majesty’s victory in the 2015 Congress, while the late Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah served as the FIFA vice-president for eight years from 1982 until 1990.

Bahrain's Shaikh Salman Ebrahim Al Khalifa returned unopposed as the AFC president.
