PUTRAJAYA - The Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has entrusted the Home Ministry (KDN) to develop a detailed guideline of the licensing sales for firecrackers and fireworks

According to KPKT Minister Nga Kor Ming, the mnistry will also leave it to the Finance Ministry to determine the amount of tax to be paid by firecrackers and fireworks importers.

"The cabinet had agreed to it yesterday," he said when met by reporters at the KPKT Majlis Jalinan Muhibbah, here today.

According to him the government will control the fireworks and firecrackers sale activities, at the source level, namely wholesalers and importers.

"Lighting up firecrackers and fireworks is legal but it is subject to license applications, import duties, regulations and guidelines," he explained.

He said these guidelines will be announced soon.

"We see a lot of accidents involving firecrackers and fireworks, because the underground syndicate profits from selling it without product safety guidelines.

Kor Ming said the new policy will brighten the celebration of every festival in Malaysia.

"We are aware that burning firecrackers is a common practice for everyone regardless of Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Aidilfitri and even Christmas.
