GEORGETOWN - The unity government has failed to control the rise of prices of essential goods, especially eggs and vegetables, and this continues to burden the lower income group, Gerakan deputy chairman Oh Tong Keong said today.

Oh added that on top of the prices of goods, but the government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has not managed to effectively address cost of living issues which continue to be elevated while the government was more interested in importing eggs from India, instead of subsidising local producers.

"This unity government has not managed to solve the problems faced by the people. In fact, they have not got the prices of goods including vegetables and eggs under control. When there is an issue with the supply of eggs, the government should look at alternatives and solve this issue, not import eggs from India," said Oh.

"Such actions create the impression that the government would rather see the lovcal egg producers go out of business. Until now, the issue with the supply of eggs is yet to be solved. And now, it is reported that the price of vegetables had risen up by about 160 per cent last month.

"What is the government doing? It seems like the government isn't bothered and are allowing the people to shoulder the burden of the rising cost of living," said Oh in a statement today.

He called for the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to investigate the sharp increase in vegetable prices so that the lower income group are not left suffering.

"At the same time the enforcement agencies need to act on those raising prices irresponsibly, in breach of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011," said Oh.
