SHAH ALAM -Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar has advised Muslims to not participate in the Thaipusam celebration rituals this Sunday.

Mohd Na'im said this was because Thaipusam was a religious event of worship that is specific to Hindus.

"My advice is based on the guidelines that have been produced by the Federal Territories Mufti, Datuk Dr Luqman Abdullah where Muslims are limited in celebrating events that are tied to another religions beliefs.

"The boundary is a peaceful one and in the spirit of tolerance and accepting the freedom for others to practice their respective religious beliefs

"Therefore, with this principle, Muslims are prohibited from participating in any non-Islamic religious celebration rituals because it is against the principles of Islamic faith," he said through a post on Facebook,

Mohd Na'im also urged all Malaysians to respect the celebrations of every religion in the country because it is the basis of a harmonious multi-cultural country.
