SHAH ALAM - Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) has several candidates capable of becoming the Menteri Besar if the coalition wins in the state election.

Pas Treasurer Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad said other candidates were capable too.

He was responding to a report that PN has not ruled out the possibility of nominating Datuk Seri Azmin Ali as Selangor Menteri Besar if he wins the upcoming state election.

“My response to the news is that it is too early to name a Menteri Besar candidate as there are others who are capable,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

However, Iskandar said any party entering the state election must name a Menteri Besar candidate and the exco line up for voters to evaluate it.

He explained voters were smarter and well informed currently and they knew who would lead the administration if a party or political coalition won the state elections.

“The practice of naming a Menteri Besar candidate and exco line up after winning the election is outdated and no longer suitable for developed states like Selangor.

“The statement such as ‘vote for us because we know what to do’ is no longer accepted in modern politics,” he added.

He said if a political party was serious on winning the state elections their candidates must be capable to lead a state.

“This (matter) is important for states such as Selangor as it is the economic hub with assets worth billions of ringgit.

Iskandar said voters would choose candidates based on merits and in some situations certain parties were ignorant towards factors that influenced voters and their decision.

“To political parties, don’t be so full of yourself by asking what the people want," he said, adding that a candidate should be appointed base on performance for the rakyat rather than just party work.

Recently, Selangor PN election machinery deputy director, Captain (Rtd) Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi said there was always an opportunity for the former Selangor Menteri Besar, who is also Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman, to return to lead the state.
