Five-time world champion lion dance team cheers Malaysian diaspora in Indonesia

JAKARTA - At least 300 Malaysians, including students living in the capital city here, watched excitedly the five-time world champion lion dance troupe performance.

The acrobatic lion dance by Jakarta-based Kong Ha Hong was the most-awaited performance during the Chinese New Year celebration event, hosted by Malaysia Chambers Jakarta (MCJ) today.

Two dancers mimicked a lion’s movements in a lion costume and showed balancing act on a series of poles that took them up from one metre to three metres off the ground amid roaring cheers and applause.

"We didn’t expect the response to be as great, maybe because we haven’t been able to organise this kind of event for so long because of the pandemic,” MCJ president Raja Elona Safinaz Raja Safian said.

Speaking to reporters after the event, she said the traditional dish salmon Yee Sang, known as prosperity toss, was served up as the first course of a celebratory banquet held at K-Link Tower.

She also said that MCJ would channel some monetary donations from companies to fund the event to earthquake relief efforts In Turkey and Syria.

Apart from its social programmes, Raja Elona Safinaz said MCJ would focus on business related programmes and become a platform for Malaysian businesses for consultations this year.

"We want to assist companies that plan to operate here in partnership with the embassy,” she said.

On Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had asked Malaysian overseas to establish a close relationship between Malaysia and the country they lived in.
