KUALA LUMPUR - MARA Liner recorded a profit of RM19.93 million despite incurring losses from its stage bus services and express buses, according to the Auditor General's Report for the Year 2021 Series 2 released today.

The report stated that the profit was through the myBAS service and other activities while stage bus and express bus services suffered losses.

"In general, profits generated amounting to RM19.93 million were used to cover operational losses of the stage bus and express buses services amounting to RM15.92 million,” according to the report.

It said although both services suffered losses, MARA Liner, in line with national policy, still continues its social service responsibility to provide public transport in rural areas.

MARA Liner was also able to record a profit and pay dividends amounting to RM122,481 and RM41,937 to MARA and MARA Corporation for the financial years 2020 and 2021 due to the company's stable financial position.

"The financial position of MARA Liner is stable because it recorded a profit before tax and zakat for the financial years 2019, 2020 and 2021 as well as accumulated profit as of Dec 31, 2021 amounting to RM7.42 million," according to the report.

At the same time, MARA Liner, which has 103 social bus service routes covering nine states in Peninsular Malaysia, namely Pahang, Kedah, Melaka, Perak, Johor, Terengganu, Selangor, Kelantan and Perlis, has achieved its corporatisation objectives, the report stated.

This achievement is the result of stage bus services for 89 social routes in rural areas and myBAS service for 14 social routes, the report added.

The report also stated that the number of MARA Liner stage bus drivers was insufficient for the period of July 2019 to July 2022.

In this regard, the auditors recommend that MARA Liner ensure that the minimum service period of myBAS is complied with to avoid penalties being imposed.

The company has been recommended to intensify the recruitment and retention of bus drivers so that service operations are not disrupted.- BERNAMA
