ALOR SETAR - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has expressed agreement to cooperate with the state government to solve illegal settlement issue faced by Melayu Islam Kedah (MIK) di Bukit Malut, Langkawi.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Noor said the former Langkawi parliament member is ready to share his opinion about the issue which is plaguing for a long time.

He said Dr Mahathir's involvement is crucial as he was one of the individuals involved in MIK placement in the area, especially from the historical aspect.

"He was the initiator who brought MIK to the area, no one as good as Dr Mahathir can tell the history of Bukit Malut.

"In a recent meeting, I asked for Dr Mahathir's support regarding the state government's proposal for National Security Council (NSC) to take over part of the Malaysia Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) at Bukit Malut to be developed as new settlement for the illegal resident there. He had agreed to cooperate," he said in a press conference after launching Kedah Cashless and handed over the land ownership and monetary donations courtesy of Kota Setar here yesterday.

Muhammad Sanusi hoped NSC will step in to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

"Dr Mahathir said we had to make sure that the housing project is cheap and affordable for the people there," he said.

He said the settlement project is under NSC's authority and not state government's project.

"The state government should not spend money to build the settlement.

"NSC need to play its role by obtainig the land and asking developers to build houses so MIK can buy the house at a reasonable rate as the land already belongs to NSC," he said.

Commenting on whether the meeting with Dr Mahathir at Perdana Leadership Foundation also mentioned the two parties' political direction, Muhammad Sanusi insisted the meeting did not touch on political issue but more on topics about Kedah like the padi industry, history and Langkawi.

"The good news I said and asked everyone to patiently wait for on Facebook was not about politics," he said.

Muhammad Sanusi said it is unknown that Dr Mahathir will cooperate with PN in the next state election (PRN) as they did not discuss about it.
