Shaiful Hazizy to contest for Umno Supreme Council post

ALOR SETAR - Kedah Umno Information Chief Datuk Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin has announced that he will be running for a spot in the supreme council in the party's elections.

The Umno Merbok Division deputy chief confirmed that he had submitted his nomination registration form on Thursday.

He said he made the decision to contest to enable the grassroots of the party to choose their leaders following several controversial issues affecting the party recently.

"I volunteered to give a new option to Umno, a younger but nevertheless experienced leadership.

"I have gone through various processes in the party and at the same time remained loyal to Umno in challenging and difficult times," he said.

Shaiful Hazizy said, it was an important decision to make in his life, career and future planning.

"This time I choose not to be in my comfort zone, I choose a winding road filled with challenging obstacles. God willing, I will continue to trust, strive and pray to be given guidance," he said.

He is also confident that he can contribute more effectively to strengthen Umno, through fresher and more practical ideas.

"I also want to see the party move towards rebuilding Umno, there needs to be changes in the party's approach and work," he said.

It is understood that, in addition to Shaiful Hazizy who is contesting for the first time, three other Kedah Umno leaders also have their eyes set on being in the Supreme Council.

They are Kedah Umno Chairman Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, Kedah Umno Deputy Chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob and Sungai Petani Umno Division Chief Datuk Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff.

On Monday, Umno Selection Committee (JPU) chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Samad announced that he had received 24 nominations for the Umno MKT position ahead of the last day of nominations this Sunday.

Although there is only less than a week left until the elections , no individual has come forward to compete for the position of Vice President as of yet.

As of Monday, a total of 111 candidates have registered to contest for posts in the party's supreme council and , Women, Youth and Puteri wings.
