National Digital Interconnection Programme (JENDELA) completes fiberisation process in Tioman Island

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have reported the latest developments regarding The National Digital Interconnection Programme (JENDELA), which includes Tioman Island undersea optical fibre implementation to His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah on Sunday.

In a statement, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the implementation of the undersea fiber optic network to Tioman Island under the initiative The Universal Service Provision Program (PPS) overseen by MCMC became the trigger to the efforts of providing optical fiber networks in all villages on the Tioman island.

"The project involves developing an optical fiber network from Kuala Rompin to Kampung Tekek for a distance of 75.2km was fully completed in September 2018 with an installation cost worth RM37.1 million.

"With the submarine fiber optic network has enabled all the villages on the island Tioman enjoys high-speed broadband Internet facilities "In addition, I have been informed that the fiber optic project Mukut for 8.5km that connects the fiber optic network from Japamala to Kg. Mukut through Kg. Nipah and Kg. Sarang Burung with an investment cost of RM2.2 million has been implemented by Telekom Malaysia (TM).

Commenting further, Fahmi said that the project started in September 2022 was completed in December 2022 and now becomes complement to all villages on Pulau Tioman available with network optical fiber.

With increasing awareness and demand, Fahmi said the rates of optical fiber usage is currently at the level of 61 percent population and with an estimation of 466 premises on Tioman Island.

"In the era of globalisation where the Internet is one of the facilities the main foundation, the project in Kg. Mukut is very important as it stimulates the digital economy of the community and Tioman Island tourism industry.

"Under the same effort, nine mobile communication service tower is also upgraded through network sharing with four network providers namely Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile is available in all villages except in Kg. Sarang Burung will be ready in March 2023.

"This implementation has made Pulau Tioman the first island to have full 4G coverage for all mobile service providers by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

Fahmi also encouraged residents to get a subscription package according to their respective needs to enjoy Internet access high quality and high speed.
