Shahrizat's leadership vs Noraini's influence likely to clash in Umno Wanita top seat
SHAH ALAM - Veteran politician and former Umno Wanita chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and incumbent Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad are likely to clash in Umno Wanita top seat for upcoming Umno polls.
Political analyst from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Dr Syaza Shukri commented that both candidates represented two different factions within Wanita.
"Shahrizat has more influence with the grassroots and is closer to the upper leadership. Meanwhile, Noraini, however, is better respected by Wanita members themselves who want to carve their own path away from the legacy of the past,"
"So it’s hard to say who would have more chances to win," she told Sinar Daily.
Syaza further added that although Umno supporters would like to see the Malay party move forward with a new reform agenda, the reality is that the old guard still has a lot of influence.
Echoing Syaza’s view, Universiti Teknologi Mara political analyst Dr Abdul Aziz Azizam also agreed that both of these candidates have their own credibility.
"Noraini is seen as having an advantage as she is the incumbent. During her tenure, she managed to make some strategic moves, including improving women's leadership capabilities, appointing women leaders in important positions.
"If those moves are right, it will present a positive result in this election," Aziz said.
As for Shahrizat, Aziz commented that this is the only time for her to make a comeback.
"Making a comeback now is a good opportunity for her to correct the perception of the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) issue that has been affecting her and his family since 2007," he added.
Meanwhile, Singapore Institute of International Affairs senior fellow Dr Oh Ei Sun said Shahrizat had build an impressive grassroots support during her years at Wanita wing.
"As evidenced by many Wanita leaders entreating her to come out. So, I think that Noraini would have to work harder."
