SHAH ALAM - Wanita Umno has strongly criticised the production of the controversial film Mentega Terbang, which it stated clearly contained elements which were inappropriate for public viewing in this country, as it insulted and denigrated Islam.

Wanita Umno chief Datuk Noraini Ahmad said airing such films seem to be an attempt to promote the culture of "nothing" among pluralistic societies, especially Muslims.

"The impact of spreading this film is huge because it can distort the faith and confuse Muslims, especially young people. Film screenings like this cannot be normalised in this country.

"Therefore, Wanita Umno also urges the government and authorities to take strict action against all parties involved in the making of the controversial film Mentega Terbang," Noraini said in a statement.

She added that Wanita Umno also urged the government to establish a special committee to study, refine, and improve existing guidelines and forms of law enforcement so that this does not happen again in the future.

"As we want to encourage the creative industry in this country, there needs to be a clear mechanism before any film produced to maintain the harmony and unity of the people in this country."

Recently, checks conducted by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) on the contents of this film have found that it goes against the creed and way of life of Muslims from the Syafie school of thought in Malaysia.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said Jakim would submit a detailed statement to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) so that action could be taken in accordance to the law.
