Commercial vehicles operating in Sabah required to install GPS
KOTA KINABALU - All commercial vehicles in Sabah and Labuan are required to be installed with a global positioning system (GPS) starting March 15.
The regulation set by the Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) is also implemented on any commercial vehicle from outside Sabah that wants to operate in Sabah.
In a statement today, CVLB said the implementation of the regulation will be done in stages in which the first phase will begin this Wednesday, with all holders of express bus licence, Carrier Licence A and Carrier Licence C required to be installed with GPS devices.
It said the implementation of the regulation is in line with the Malaysian Road Safety Plan to ensure commercial vehicles comply with the safety level and regulations set.
"The matter was decided at Sabah CVLB Board meeting on Feb 27, the statement said.
According to the statement, licensees who want to install GPS on their vehicles must have it installed by a company certified by the Sabah CVLB Board. However, it said Sabah CVLB may grant permission to any licensee who has installed or wishes to install a GPS device from a non-listed company, provided that it meets the parameters set by the Board.
The statement said that any commercial vehicle that is not equipped with GPS or with GPS but does not meet the set parameters will be allowed only after meeting several criteria.
Vehicles from Sabah and Labuan may be considered for license renewal once a year, while vehicles from outside Sabah will be granted a permit for three months at a time if they apply by Dec 31 this year.
