TOKYO - The marriage institution is no longer considered sacred, according to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In a series of tweets highlighting the important points of his talk at the the Global Education Forum in Tokyo, Dr Mahathir touched on the issue of marriage.

He said that people did not seem to have much respect for the marriage institution and are sleeping around all over the place. Dr Mahathir went on to say that the younger generation has been taking on lot of western values without really thinking about them.

"It's important to remember our own cultural values. Marriage is about having kids and keeping families together.

"We have come to a stage where same-sex marriages are possible. But if we keep going down that road, there will be no children, and the whole generation will perish." he elaborated.

His talk which was delivered last Tuesday was on what issues the younger generation should focus on.

He then went on to talk about climate change and how everyone should take this issue seriously and figure out how to handle the worst-case scenarios.

"Even though some countries haven't felt the effects of climate change yet, we can't just ignore it.

"In Malaysia, we're fortunate to avoid things like earthquakes and volcanoes, but floods are becoming more and more common there. We need to be prepared by doing more research on how to deal with climate change." he said

Dr Mahathir then spoke of war and how it was a terrible thing.

"War is a terrible thing that we need to get rid of.

"The younger generation needs to say "no" to war as a way to solve problems. Killing people is never okay, no matter how many you kill. It's not brave or heroic to take lives.

"Instead, we should focus on resolving conflicts peacefully through things like the court system and talking things out. By working towards peace, we can make a better world for future generation" he said
