For the longest time, I’ve experienced gut health issues. From supplements to probiotics, I’ve tried it all.

But a few months ago, my sister introduced me to kombucha. The health-conscious would probably know what it is but for the uninitiated; it’s a fizzy, sweet, and sour drink made with tea. Kombucha is known for its probiotics, and antioxidant benefits among others, which could support good gut health.

I have to be honest, I didn’t quite like the taste. It was too acidic, not at all sweet and it smelled kind of... funny. But I didn’t want to give up on kombucha so quickly.

I tried kombucha from another brand, Uniiq. The lifestyle brand has an existing range of kombuchas, but they recently added two new flavours to the line-up and now offers six flavours.

The two new flavours, pink guava and mulberry joins other flavours such as classic, rose, calamansi, passion fruit.

I had a chance to taste all six flavours and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the taste that isn’t overwhelming on the acid. The sour taste blended with the aromatic earthy fermented black tea serves up a good drink to not only quench your thirst but is also good for health.

“At Uniiq, we are committed to bringing the best of our 4,500mg prebiotics in every bottle of our kombucha, making it beneficial for you and your health. Now with our new flavours, customers have even more options when choosing a healthy kombucha drink," said Uniiq founder Soon Teoh.

Uniiq also collaborated with an expert who specialises in developing nutrition and wellness programmes, Dr. Vaidehi Ulaganathan to raise awareness of the benefits of kombucha. He is the Head of the Nutrition and Wellness Programme at UCSI University.

“Our sedentary, stressful lifestyles can really deplete the microbes in the gut, leading to a variety of health issues. It is absolutely critical to supplement the healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut to ensure that the body can absorb the necessary nutrients and support the rest of the body,” said Dr. Vaidehi.

Dr. Vaidehi believes that dietary and lifestyle factors cause health problems that affect a large number of Malaysians, such as diabetes and certain heart conditions. However, it can reduce the risk of these conditions by improving our digestive system function.
