PETALING JAYA - The actions of overcharging haircut services for tourists, as what had gone viral on social media on Monday, can tarnish Malaysia's image internationally.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said he had asked his officers to conduct investigations on the claims.

He said the traders would not be exempt from strict actions.

Salahuddin said the ministry had given warnings to traders to obey and ensure the services rendered to locals or foreign tourists are priced reasonably.

"Don't charge or take advantage to gain absurd profits, as traders will face actions under the profiteering act.

"These actions of gaining excessive profits, also tarnish the country's image and reputation as a tourist destination. We were supposed to be offering best services at affordable prices," he said when met at the Bakul Rahmah presentation to 50 Grab riders and drivers at the Axis Business Centre, here, on Tuesday.

He was asked to comment on the issue that went viral on social media involving a tourist couple from England who were unsatisfied with the RM120 charges for a haircut.

After speaking with several locals, they claimed that haircut prices were frequently under RM50.
