SHAH ALAM - Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has criticised Jofri Jaraiee, the Pas Sarawak commissioner for objecting to a casino in Sarawak as it would do more harm than good.

Tiong said Jofri is known for using religious justifications for statements that could potentially threaten the peace among the nation's diverse religious and ethnic communities to gain popularity.

"Such action is dangerous and can cause dissension among the community," Tiong was quoted in Borneo Post.

Tiong said Jofri's statements would make the government's efforts to promote greater economic development in Sarawak difficult.

As a Sarawakian, Tiong said the responsibility for the nation's progress at the federal ministry level is significant.

He referred to a statement made by Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, clarifying his stand on the proposed amusement park, golf course, and casino in Borneo Highlands.

Tiong stated that the decision on this matter ultimately lies with the state government, led by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Tiong said the development in Borneo Highlands will raise Sarawak's revenue, stimulate tourism and provide a large number of job opportunities.

"The neighbourhood's basic amenities and tourism attractions will also be improved once the plan is approved and put into operation. Of course, this income can also be used by the Sarawak government to improve rural areas.

"Why should it be stopped or objected as it may bring in a positive and energising economic cycle for the benefit of the people? " he questioned.

Tiong further added that the proposed projects aim to cater to the future development of the people in Sarawak with the primary goal to fulfill the dream of the rural community to enjoy the same amenities as urban residents, including good road infrastructure.

"This needs to be improved and one way to do that is to raise state revenue in order to meet the expectations of the people."

Tiong suggested that if someone is concerned about the potential societal issues arising from the presence of a casino, appropriate oversight measures could be implemented. For instance, he proposed allowing foreigners to enter the casino at any time as a possible solution.

"If they are local people, then they must comply with the specific rules to enter the casino, and other relevant conditions that it deems necessary to be implemented," he added.

Despite Malaysia being a multiracial and multi-religious nation, some of its politicians exhibit more conservative attitudes and behaviours than those in certain middle eastern countries, he said.

"Many middle eastern nations are progressively heading into moderation. For instance, there are upscale casinos throughout the Middle East, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host Miss World 2023 this year. So is Sarawak not allowed to be developed in Malaysia?" he questioned.
