Jinq En brings in sole medal on first day of swimming competition

PHNOM PENH - Swimmer Phee Jinq En saves the day for the swimming squad on the first day of competition in the 2023 Sea Games swimming event when she delivered a bronze medal at Morodok Techo Aquatic Centre here on Saturday.

Turning out for her fifth Sea Games, Jinq En finished the women’s 50 metre (m) breaststroke event in 31.94 seconds for the third place.

The gold medal was won by Thai swimmer Jenjira Srisaad who clocked 31.22s, to edge Singapore swimmer Letitia Sim who recorded 31.65s in second place.

When met by reporters, Jinq En was satisfied to be able to contribute a medal to the national contingent.

"It was a positive start and I hope to do better in the next event," said the 25-year-old swimmer.

She said that her achievement was a positive change after her lackluster performance in last edition when she failed to win any medals.

Meanwhile, other Malaysian swimmers failed to get on the podium in the men's 200m individual medley, men's 100m freestyle, women's 200m butterfly and women's 4x100m freestyle relay.

The opening day of the swimming event saw the dominance of swimmers from Singapore and Vietnam. - BERNAMA
