KOTA TINGGI - The Bar Council's action passing a motion of no confidence against Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Idris Harun must be accepted openly.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said she believed that move was made based on the Bar Council's rights.

"Malaysia is a free country, to me there's nothing. Every association has its rights, if they believe in it, it is their beliefs and there's nothing that could be done.

"I think the unity government is a government that practices democracy and we must be open to accepting criticisms from the people or professional bodies.

"To me the unity government must become a responsible government that stresses on transparency and accountability aspects," she told reporters at the Pengerang Parliament Aidilfitri open house at Kejora Hall, Bandar Penawar here, today.

Azalina was commenting on the Bar Council's move passing a no confidence motion against the AG during the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Thursday.

National Council of Professors (Politics, Governance and Law Cluster) member Professor Dr Nik Ahmad Kalam Nik Mahmod said the legal body's action was serious and harsh as it challenged the AG's authority.
