SHAH ALAM - The Unity Government must ensure there is a clear line between the roles and functions of the attorney general.

Co-Founder of UNDI18 GenT '22, Tharma Pillai, said that one of the most important things for Malaysians to understand is that government is governed by a constitutional system whereby the attorney general has great power.

"The attorney-general is not only the country's advisor but could also prosecute perpetrators.

"There is an overlap of powers between these two roles.

"So, this is a reform that we want to carry out. In the future, we need an individual who can effectively be separated from these two functions," Tharma said during a press conference after the APPGM event held at the Karangkraf Complex here on Tuesday.

He further added that these efforts should be supported not only by the people's representatives but by all Malaysians.

"I also want to say that many young people think that there are two levels of people: the common people and the elite.

"We need to make efforts to regain the trust of the people.

"Yes, members of parliament are the rakyat voices. But we are young people; we have the right to speak. You need to speak up and build a nation that can develop," he added.
