KUALA SELANGOR - The heat wave which is sweeping over the country has so far helped farmers to improve their agriculture production but the long-term effect of the situation is yet to be known.

Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) acting director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri said the weather condition which is expected to last for several months is being monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

"Currently, we see that crops are growing well compared to the rainy season earlier which caused a decrease in supply,” he told a press conference after the flag off ceremony for the Popsmalaya Ice Bars to China by FAMA chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli at Puncak Alam today.

Meanwhile, in terms of pricing Abdul Rashid said the price of vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes had dropped a week before Hari Raya celebrations, but prices have gone up again following the opening of schools and restaurants.

He said FAMA would continue to help farmers by buying their produce if the market price is lower than the cost of production through the implementation of a price floor.

Earlier, Abdul Rashid said the inaugural shipment of Popsmalaya Ice Bars products to Hong Kong and China markets by Doluvo Sdn Bhd was the result of its involvement in the AgroXport project managed by FAMA.

"The shipment of 3,100 cartons of Popsmalaya Ice Bars consisting of five flavours namely Lychee Peach, Mango, Passion Fruit Pineapple, Strawberry and Grape will be marketed through China’s largest online platforms TMall and Doyuin.

"The export value of Popsmalaya Ice Bars to the Hong Kong and China markets is expected to be worth RM5 million a year," he said. - BERNAMA
