ABIM's first president dies

KUALA LUMPUR - The founder and the first president of the the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM), Prof Dr Ustaz Razali Nawawi has died 6.45am on Thursday.

He passed at a private hospital in Bandar Baru Bangi, his death was announced on the central ABIM official Facebook page

Ustaz Razali was 83 years old.

ABIM's announcement on its official Facebook page read that the funeral rites will be conducted at Al-Umm Mosque, Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, at 10 am. He is expected to be buried after the Zohor prayer. Last weekend, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim spent time visiting the deceased at his residence.

Anwar was accompanied by his wife,Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail when he visited Razali, who is a close friend of the Prime Minister.

The late Ustaz Razali became the first ABIM president in 1972 and introduced the usrah system before the post was taken over by Anwar in 1974. The deceased played an important role in forming and developing the organization, which continues to fight for the interests of Muslims in Malaysia. He later served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the International Islamic University from 1983 to 1993. - AWANI
