MACC confirms investigating RM399 mil Petronas Sarawak project

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirms opening an investigation paper into allegations of corruption involving Petronas and an international oil and gas company. The anti-graft commission added that Petronas has provided full cooperation to MACC in the investigation involving the project worth RM399 million in Sarawak.

"Regarding allegations of corruption involving Petronas projects and an international oil and gas company that were posted on a portal recently, MACC confirms that it has opened an investigation paper into the matter.

"So far, MACC has found several weaknesses in practices, systems, and work procedures regarding the matter.

"The commission has proposed improvements to the standard operating procedures (SOP) as preventive measures," it said in a statement earlier.

MACC has also called upon any party with new information regarding this issue to come forward and channel it to the commission for further investigation under the MACC Act 2009.

An online news portal had previously reported that Petronas was allegedly involved in awarding contracts, amounting to RM399 million, to a company with operations in 14 countries to construct an onshore gas plant in Sarawak.

The report also claimed that the company was involved in serious corruption offences, which resulted it in being banned from operating in another country.
