JAKARTA, Indonesia - The number of dengue fever cases in Indonesia totalled 35,694 as of the 22nd week of 2023, which ended on June 4, with 270 fatalities reported.

West Java Province recorded the highest number of cases with 6,000 cases, Bali (3,400 cases), followed by Central Java, East Java, and West Nusa Tenggara.

The highest number of fatalities were recorded in Central Java, West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Kalimantan, according to the Ministry of Health in a statement.

A total of 143,184 cases of dengue fever were reported last year with the highest number of 36,500 cases in West Java.

There were 1,236 dengue deaths due to complications with children under 14 years old accounting for 63 per cent of the cases.

The public is urged to increase its vigilance against dengue mosquito bites in light of the weather change brought on by the El Nino phenomenon, which encourages mosquito breeding.

According to the ministry, when temperatures exceed 30 degrees, dengue mosquitoes become more active and bite three to five times more frequently. - BERNAMA
