Malaysia's industries spent RM3.1 billion on environmental protection in 2021

PUTRAJAYA - Industry players in Malaysia spent RM3.1 billion on environmental protection initiatives, recording 4.8 per cent growth in 2021 compared to RM2.97 billion in the previous year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

In a report on Environmental Protection Expenditure 2022 released today, DOSM said the operating expenditure edged up by 8.6 per cent to RM2.4 billion in 2021 from RM2.2 billion previously, while capital expenditure shrank by 6.3 per cent to RM713.4 million from RM761.4 million.

Pollution management topped the environmental protection expenditure in 2021 at RM2.21 billion, followed by waste management expenditure at RM803.7 million.

The remaining expenditure was spent on the environmental assessment and charges at RM70.6 million, other environmental protection expenditure at RM19.3 million and protection of wildlife and habitat at RM12.2 million.

"The environmental protection expenditure in 2021 was largely attributed to manufacturing which amounted to RM2.48 billion, followed by the services sector at RM386.4 million,” it said, adding that these two sectors dominate the environmental protection expenditure with a combined share of 92.2 per cent.
