SHAH ALAM - Malaysians who wish to visit European Union (EU) countries will need travel authorisation through the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) starting next year.

The official ETIAS website of the EU states that the application process is conducted online and is mandatory for visitors from visa-exempt countries intending to enter the Schengen Zone.

Currently, Malaysian passport holders have the privilege of visa-free access to 63 countries, among these countries are 30 EU countries.

"With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you will have the flexibility to enter European countries as often as you want for short-term stays, normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

"However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions," it stated.

Applications can be filled through official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application, which costs €7 for each application.

The EU further said that most applicants are processed within minutes, however it reminded that some applications may take longer to process.

"Please note that this period could be extended by up to 14 days if you are requested to provide additional information or documentation or up to 30 days if you are invited to an interview.

"This is why you should apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation well in advance of your planned journey," it stated.
