KUALA LUMPUR - Gerard Ong, a Malaysian student from Nexus International School Malaysia, has achieved an extraordinary feat by attaining a perfect score of 45 points in the 2023 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

This outstanding accomplishment places Gerard in an elite group of only 179 students worldwide who attained a flawless score this year.

Gerard said he views his perfect score of 45 as a surreal experience and an unexpected achievement, attributing his success to his resilience and hard work over the past two years.

"At Nexus, I was also able to take advantage of the myriad of co-curricular opportunities that complemented my academic studies.

"I believe such holistic education provided a good work-life balance that was, ultimately, the key to my

success,” he said in a statement provided by Nexus International School Malaysia, while acknowledging the support he received from his family, friends, and teachers throughout his IB journey.

The IB Diploma Programme is for students aged 16-19, recognised and respected by the world’s leading universities, and evidence suggests that higher rates of students of such programme go on to university are more likely to attend a top 20 university and achieve a first-class honours degree.

Gerard said he has decided to pursue his academic journey at King's College London, University of London, renowned for its prestigious programmes, adding that he has chosen to study International Relations as his field of specialisation.

The student who hails from Petaling Jaya, Selangor has already secured six university offers and nine scholarships amounting to over US$360,000 from prestigious institutions in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

During his time in the IB Programme, Gerard actively engaged in various programmes, sports, community service, and assumed leadership roles in the Student Council and Model United Nations programme.
