TAIPING - A 22-year-old woman seeking treatment for bleeding at Taiping Hospital on Sunday led the police to uncover an incident involving an abandoned premature baby girl in Kamunting, near the hospital.

Taiping District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid said the police received a report from the hospital suspecting the woman of concealing the delivery.

"Upon receiving the report, the police immediately responded and discovered a baby girl left at the rear of a house.

"The baby was discovered covered in red ants and wrapped in a cloth and towel," he said in a statement, today.

The senior police officer said the newborn was rushed to Taiping Hospital and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

"The baby is reportedly stable while the suspect is still receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The case is currently under investigation under Section 317 of the Penal Code for child abandonment, he said.
