IPOH - As an act of love, a woman entered into marriage with two men, although the act is prohibited in Islam

Lawyer Shazril Khairy Mustafa revealed a true story that occurred a decade ago involving his client, a local woman in her early 20s at a northern state in the Peninsular.

He said the incident was exposed after the woman's first husband whom she got married with in southern Thailand produced their marriage registration certificate to the state religious office.

"Initially, the woman denied about her first marriage. I went with her father to southern Thailand to confirm the marriage registration and then her father confirmed that the writing on the document was that of his daughter's.

"The woman finally made the confession to me personally after being pushed to come clean and she gave the reason that it was due to her love for both the men," he told Sinar, today.

He said the first marriage was kept secret from the family, but the woman still married the man who was her family's choice.

Shazril said based on the confession, the woman said during the day, she would be with her first husband giving an excuse that she was working and in the evening, she will go back to her parents' house to be with the second husband.

"After knowing this, I advised her that such practice is prohibited in Islam and it could not continue. Finally, the woman agreed and chose to marry her second husband who was her family's choice.

"Since the first marriage was valid, the couple had to go through a divorce process in court and then she tied the knot again with the second husband after observing the iddah (waiting period following divorce or death of husband).

"During the incident, the woman was not pregnant," he said.

He explained that similar cases have taken place especially involving marriages between a local citizen and a foreign woman who concealed her marriage stating she was divorced.

Shazril said he revealed about the incident so that it could be a lesson for others to be more vigilant and aware that such practice was a sin in Islam.
