FT Islamic Council allocates RM13 mil education funds to outstanding underprivileged students

Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said through the scheme, assistance will be offered to tithe recipients, the needy and Muslim converts living in the three Federal Territories who have taken the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan at the diploma level and have obtained excellent results with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.50 and above.
"This scheme is a strategic collaboration between MAIWP and PTPTN for asnaf students who excel at the diploma level in medical and non-medical fields to settle their PTPTN loans," he said at the launch of the education scheme and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between MAIWP and PTPTN at University College MAIWP International (UCMI) here today.
Also present were MAIWP chairman Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar, PTPTN chairman Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim, MAIWP acting chief executive officer Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid and UCMI vice chancellor Prof Dr Wan Mohd Azizi Wan Sulaiman.
Mohd Na'im said it is hoped that through the initiative the students would be motivated to study hard and achieve excellent results in their studies.
Meanwhile, he said MAIWP offers 30 aid schemes through tithe distribution covering aspects of welfare, education, medical treatment, housing, entrepreneurship and community development for the asnaf group in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.
He said from Jan 1 to June 30 this year, tithes totalling RM420 million were distributed to eligible recipients.
"The funds were distributed to the asnaf group with meticulous planning and through various initiatives,” he said.
When met after the ceremony, Mohd Na'im said he had always encouraged agencies under his ministry to forge strategic collaborations with corporate companies and non-governmental organisations in an effort to ease the burden of the people and help improve socio economic conditions through education.
"The Unity Government believes that helping the community is a shared responsibility and that the involvement of various parties will have a greater impact on the community," he added. - Bernama
