PKR unveils its candidates for the state polls, an interesting mix of the old and the new

KUALA LUMPUR: 58 candidates from PKR will battle it out in the six state polls scheduled for Aug 12.

This was announced by its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the party's candidate announcement in Shah Alam on Saturday night.

A total of twenty candidates will contest in Selangor, while Negeri Sembilan has six candidates, Terengganu (three), Kelantan (six), Kedah (10) and Penang (13).

Two caretaker Minister Besar are set to defend their seats, namely Selangor caretaker minister Besar Datuk Seri Amiruddin Shari, who would be defending his Sungai Tua seat, and Negri Sembilan caretaker minister Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun will defend his Sikamat seat.

Anwar also announced a new candidate for the Kuala Terengganu by-election, which would be held on the same day as the state elections, fielding former Pas member of Parliament Ahmad Amzad Hashim.

Meanwhile for Penang, PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will be replaced by PKR youth leader Fahmi Zainol for the Pantai Jerejak seat.

The announcement for the Kota Lama seat in Kelantan was put on hold, due to conflicts with Amanah regarding the seat.

PKR will also place their hopes on rapper Altimet, or also known ar Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman Alhadad, making his debut as an election candidate contesting the Lembah Jaya seat in Selangor.

It is interesting to note that in Kedah, PKR seems to be betting on entirely fresh faces.

Newbies include none other than Firdaus Johari, the son of Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, who would be fielded to replace him as the PKR candidate for the Gurun seat, Kedah PKR treasurer Teh Lean Ong will represent the party for the Kulim seat, while state PKR Wanita wing chief Sabrina Ahmad will be vying for the Jitra seat.

Only one incumbent, state PKR information chief Datuk Zamri Yusuf, will defend his Suka Menanti seat.
