KUALA TERENGGANU - Amanah has expressed shock over Barisan Nasional (BN) announcing its candidate for the Tepuh state seat last night.

Terengganu Amanah chief Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad said the announcement came as a surprise as the Terengganu Unity state secretariat had previously agreed to allocate the seat to Amanah.

He said Amanah had not considered giving away the Tepuh seat despite rumours suggesting a swap with Nurul Izzah Anwar, the former PKR Permatang Pauh MP to contest in the upcoming by-election for the Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary seat.

"We have never considered giving up the Tepuh state seat to BN as it was mutually agreed between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN during a meeting last May," he told Sinar.

The Kuala Terengganu by-election will be held after Pas MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim was annulled by the Election Court over allegations of corruption during the 15th general election (PRU15) in November.

During GE15, Amzad, who was also the former deputy Science, Technology, and Innovation minister had successfully defended the Kuala Terengganu Parliament seat.

He had won the seat in GE14 with a majority of 40,907 votes.

In the four-cornered contest, Amzad won with a 63,026 votes against BN candidate Datuk Mohd Zuber Embong (22,109 votes), Raja Kamarul Bahrin (10,946 votes) while Pejuang candidate Mohamad Abu Bakar secured 481 votes.

Raja Bahrin said party president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu will be announcing the seats the party will be contesting soon.

He added that currently, there are no overlapping seats in the state and was confident that the Tepuh seat belongs to PH.

In GE14, the Tepuh state seat was won by the Pas candidate, Hismuddin Abdul Karim who garnered 10,728 votes, defeating his BN opponent, Basir Ismail, who received 8,065 votes while PKR candidate Wan Hafizie lost his deposit with only 1,002 votes.
